Stories in the community

A glimpse of stories shared

My storytelling for libraries invites children and families to join in through voice, rhythm, movement and playful participation. Different audiences, different settings, and a shared invitation to take part. Here are some of the places where I have brought storytelling into community life.

Stories, language and belonging

Through Space2B and the City of Port Phillip’s multicultural storytime initiative, I tell stories in Hindi and support the program as a coordinator and trainer.

The initiative brings community language storytimes to St Kilda, Emerald Hill and Port Melbourne libraries. My sessions invite young children and their families into stories through voice, rhythm, movement and participation.

It is an opportunity to hear a home language in a shared community space, enjoy stories together and make connections across generations.

Storytelling at St Kilda Festival

My performance at St Kilda Festival brought storytelling into a larger public celebration—a different setting from an intimate library storytime.

Festival storytelling offers families a moment to gather around a story within the wider event. Voice, movement and invitations to participate help create a shared experience.

For organisers, the format can be planned around the audience, available time and performance space, with a single session or several performances across the event.

Finding a voice, building connections

I facilitated Find Your Voice with Storytelling for the EmpowerMe 2 group at Glen Eira Adult Learning Centre, on the culmination day of their eight-week program.

The workshop brought together stories, group activities, breathing exercises and opportunities to explore voice and expression. Participants were invited to step outside their comfort zones and connect through storytelling.

This is one way storytelling can be woven into adult-learning and community programs, alongside offerings for children and families.

Culture, language & connection

Celebrate through story

Stories are woven into festivals and celebrations all over the world. I can curate sessions around cultural occasions, inviting children and families to experience the stories, characters, ideas and traditions connected with them.

Through storytelling, movement, music and participation, audiences can explore a celebration together, with space for curiosity, questions and connections to their own experiences.

Other celebrations and themes can be discussed when planning your program.

Holi · Diwali · Onam · Ganesh Chaturthi · Janmashtami · Raksha Bandhan · Eid · Christmas

English · Hindi · Bilingual Hindi–English

Storytelling sessions, Story Theatre shows and selected workshops are available in these formats. Bilingual storytelling gives children and families an opportunity to hear stories move between languages and experience the expressions and rhythms each brings.

A word from an organiser

Rohini’s workshops help to activate voice and creative expression in a safe and supportive environment. Using storytelling, interactive activities and vocal experimentation, Rohini takes participants through a journey of self-exploration by encouraging personal creativity and embracing your unique voice to be heard! Informative, explorative and fun!

Let’s plan your event

Bring storytelling into your program

Whether you are programming a library holiday activity, a cultural celebration, a family festival or a community workshop, I can help you choose an experience that works for your audience and setting.

Tell me a little about:

  • Your audience’s ages and approximate numbers
  • Your venue and preferred date
  • The time available for your session
  • Your theme, celebration or program goals
  • Whether you would like one session or several

I can recommend a suitable session or combination of activities. Space, equipment and any specific set-up requirements will be discussed as we plan the booking.

Shaped around your event

Sessions can be adapted to suit your audience, available time, indoor or outdoor setting and programming requirements.

Storytelling sessions typically run for approximately 30–45 minutes. Workshop and Story Theatre timings depend on the selected format and age group.
